UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION POLICY COMMITTEE
ATTACHMENT B

Resolution to Amend the 2002 Repeat Grade Policy

WHEREAS the writers of the 1996 repeat policy did so with great care and concern for maintaining academic integrity and rigor, and the writers of its modification in 2002 did so with identical intentions, valid concerns in interpreting the policy and difficulties in its implementation have been identified (refer to attachment 1); and

WHEREAS the 2002 policy inadvertently introduces both potential and real difficulties in grading procedure, transcritping, and uniform consistency in its application; and

WHEREAS the amended policy (see attachment 2) would remedy such concerns and assist in retention of students, eliminate transcripting and record keeping problems, encourage and demand students' acceptance of responsibility for grades, support the opportunity to study until a subject is learned, recognize catalog integrity, and promote academic rigor at SIU; and

WHEREAS the 2002 Repeat Grade policy has not yet been formally implemented,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate approve the amended 2002 Repeat Grade Policy, and that the 2003-2004 SIUC Undergraduate Catalog be edited in all instances appropriate to reflect this change, effective immediately.
