Resolution on the Governor’s Proposed Budget Cuts
to Higher Education in FY03-04

WHEREAS the Governor’s budget proposals for FY03 and 04 will severely compromise the multiple missions of higher education in Illinois, including research, instruction, and service to the state; and

WHEREAS the Governor’s budget proposals appear to be based on erroneous notions of higher education and its contributions to the state’s social, cultural, and economic infrastructures; and

WHEREAS the Governor’s budget proposals do not take into account the input provided by the IBHE and the universities themselves, whose requests for clarifications have not been addressed in a timely manner to mitigate the impact of the cuts;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate protest the proposed cuts to the FY03 and 04 budgets for higher education in general and for SIUC in particular;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate call upon the University community–faculty, staff, and students alike–to mobilize a concerted campaign to inform members of the General Assembly of the consequences of the Governor’s budget proposals for higher education.
