GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE WHEREAS the Joint Appointment section in the Employee Handbook (Chapter 3, Section III.D.) clearly refers to the situation where the joint appointment is to two basic academic units; and
ATTACHMENT CResolution to Approve Recommendation to Change
Wording in the Employee Handbook to Clarify
Granting Tenure to Persons Holding Joint AppointmentsWHEREAS it is clear from reading Promotion Policies and Procedures for Faculty, as well as Tenure Policies and Procedures, that the heart of the matter is the basic academic unit (as defined in Section I.D.,p.75); and
WHEREAS there are joint appointments that involve just a single basic academic unit with no intent to establish another option for tenure; and
WHEREAS the addition of a single sentence to existing wording simply clarifies intent and administrative procedures, and program and university administrators are not aware of any considerations against adoption;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate approves and recommends to the appropriate administrative bodies that the second paragraph of the Joint Appointment section of Tenure Policies and Procedures (Employee Handbook, Chapter 3, Section III.D, page 76-77) be modified by the addition of the last sentence (in italics) as follows:
In a joint appointment other than 50/50, tenure may be achieved only in the unit where an appointment larger than 50 percent is held. That unit must then be prepared to absorb the remainder of the faculty member's appointment if the faculty member relinquishes, or is asked to relinquish, the appointment that is less than 50 percent. In the case of a joint appointment where there is only a single BASIC ACADEMIC UNIT, tenure may be achieved when the appointment percentage is less than 50 percent in the basic academic unit.Return to July 10, 2001, Agenda
