Resolution to Approve Re-Naming the B.S. and Related Specialties in
General Agriculture and Re-Naming the Department of
Plant, Soil, and General Agriculture, College of Agricultural Sciences

WHEREAS the 2002 program review of the undergraduate programs in the Department of Plant, Soil, and General Agriculture recommended modifying the B.S. in General Agriculture to "convey the actual intent and purpose of the four specializations"; and

WHEREAS the Department has responded by re-considering its curricula in light of systems and systems management, which are more descriptive of the many activities incorporated into the existing Agricultural Production, Education and Technologies specializations; and

WHEREAS changing the name of General Agriculture to Agricultural Systems will have two major advantages, namely, to expand the number and types of students served while increasing visibility and maintaining high levels of service to traditional student populations, and to make possible a broader recognition of the program by prospective employers; and

WHEREAS the change in the name of the degree has no budgetary or staffing implications in the program and requires no concurrence from other degree programs at SIUC; and

WHEREAS the entire Department of Plant, Soil Science, and General Agriculture approved the name change, including a modification of the Department's own name to reflect the undergraduate degree, that is, to become the Department of Plant, Soil, and Agricultural Systems;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Faculty Senate recommend approval of the change in the name of the B.S. in General Agriculture to the B.S. in Agricultural Systems, including changes in its specializations from Agricultural Technologies, Agricultural Production, and Agricultural Education and Information to Agricultural Systems Technology, Agricultural Production, Agricultural Education, and General Agriculture, respectively; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Faculty Senate recommend approval of the change in the name of the Department of Plant, Soil, and General Agriculture to the Department of Plant, Soil, and Agricultural Systems.
