FACULTY SENATE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
ATTACHMENT A

Faculty Senate Resolution Urging the Administration and the Faculty
Association to Return to the Bargaining Table

WHEREAS the three constituency groups representing the faculty, namely, the Faculty Senate, Graduate Council, and Faculty Association, have accepted a Memorandum of Understanding that defines their respective responsibilities, but only the Faculty Senate represents the academic concerns of all the faculty at SIUC; and

WHEREAS an interruption of academic life brought by a Faculty Association strike will have unfortunate immediate consequences, such as a disruption to our students' completion of course work and progress towards graduation; and

WHEREAS successful collective bargaining will have positive long-term consequences, such as a higher quality educational product for our students delivered by a better-paid faculty who participate more fully in defining their compensation, working conditions, and terms of employment; and

WHEREAS a timely resolution of contract negotiations between the SIUC administration and the Faculty Association is in the best interest of the entire academic community, students and faculty alike,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate urges the SIUC administration and the Faculty Association to return to the bargaining table to resolve their differences in good faith, with or without professional mediation, in order to protect the immediate and long-term interests of the university's academic community.
